ARCHIVE ~ 2014 Resolution: Exercise of Thought ~ A weekly post of interesting, fascinating and thought-provoking ideas that strengthen that big 'ol muscle up there

Week 4 & 5: Who are victims in war?

This is less of a new concept, and more of a remembrance that victims of war are not exclusive to the "losing side" or to those on the defense.

Generation War is miniseries that focuses on a group of German young adults who are encouraged to serve and support the Nazi's invasion of Russia and the continuation of Aryan domination (WWII).

The three part series not only reflects the suffering of the Jews, Russians, Poles and Ukrainians, but also the suffering of the German people themselves: Young German soldiers forced to continue an immoral and un-winnable war; Civilians realizing the mortality and impending damnation of your homeland; and the once-elite nation witnessing the international abandonment, and self-destructive nature of those in power.

Suffice to say, all participating nations, whether offensive or defensive, are victims of war. Some more than others - granted. But the human factor behind conflict is never unaffected by the seemingly strategic art of war.

Week 3: Why do societies collapse?

Why certain societies collapse and others endure can be attributed to 5 key factors :
- The degree in which a society inevitably destroys it's resource base
- Climate change
- A society's relationship with complimentary neighboring societies
- A society's relationship with hostile neighboring societies
- And, the cultural and political characteristics of a society, impacting their ability to solve the above issues. These include the conflict of interest between authority's short-term desires and society's long-term requirements; as well as the values and characteristic strengths that hinder their ability to adapt or change
In relation to ourselves, this kind of analysis provides an objective picture of the course of our own civilization, not only as Australians or Westerners, but as the society of man.

Week 2: Hackschooling

We typically attend school for around 11 to 13 years of our life, yet there is an apparent chunk of vital information that isn't being taught.

"Much of education is orientated, for better or worse, towards making a living rather than making a life."

When examined , traditional schooling lacked the teaching of therapeutic lifestyle education and life skills, such as exercise, nutrition, time in nature, contribution and service, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious and spiritual development.

Undoubtedly, there is a lack of this sort of education- whether it is the responsibility of parents or schools to teach is debatable.

Week 1: Why do we sleep?

Today's society treats sleep as an illness, rather than something we should take very seriously.

The biological purpose of sleep is theorized into 3 popular approaches: for restoration, energy conservation, and information processing and brain function.

In addition, the benefits of sleep and avoiding sleep-deprivation include increased concentration, attention, decision making , creativity, social skills, and both mental and physical health.
